San Quentin Prison
Client: California Department of General Services
Oakland
The Department of General Services contracted
with Condon-Johnson & Associates (CJA) to install a seawall
property adjoining the San Quentin State Prison.
The Challenge
In order to protect the work site and limit sedimentation
CJA first installed a sheet pile enclosure draped in geo-textile.
Inside this enclosure, CJA installed precast pilasters with
precast facia panels. Installation had to be closely scheduled
to maximize work hours around low tide.
The Solution
Eighty-two pilasters were installed utilizing an AF-18 drill
rig by IMT. Piles were installed to depths of 40’ in
sandy overburden and siltstone bedrock. Each pilaster was
then tied back with a double corrosion protected anchor installed
with a Klemm drill.
Native on-site material was drilled, shot
and excavated for use as backfill behind the wall. As part
of this contract, Rip Rap was placed to protect the front
of the wall.
The Result
The project covered a length of 2,200’ that included
1,200’ of pilaster wall, and 1,000’ of Rip Rap
protection. The project was valued at $ 5.3 million.
