Reno RETRAC (The City of Reno, NV)
Client: Granite Construction
Oakland
The City of Reno, NV has entered into
an agreement with the Federal Government to lower rail lines
that traverse the city, into an open conduit. This would permit
the bridging of the rail to eliminate rail/pedestrian/automobile
conflicts. Granite Construction has subcontracted with Condon-Johnson
& Associates (CJA) to install bridge piles and create a
waterproof barrier for the base of the excavation. The
Challenge
Reno is underlain with a granular deposit that has numerous
large cobbles and boulders. The water table is at about 15’.
The Solution
The $ 25.4 million project was obtained through the design build
arrangement whereby CJA devised several innovative solutions
to handle these difficult geo-technical conditions. Drilled
bridge piles were installed utilizing a down-the-hole-hammer
that drills the holes and is then used as a conduit for grout.
Piling then is wet set through the grout to create bridge
piling for the structures or soldier piling for the water
cutoff.
Jet grouting subsequently seals the gaps between
the soldier piles. Lateral loads on the wall are contained
using self-drilled and grouted Titan and MAI bars.
