Pier 400
Client: Traylor Pacific
Los Angeles
When the Port of Los Angeles required
added berthing space, they undertook the creation of a new
facility called Pier 400.
The Challenge
The location, having been created entirely from dredged material,
had a liquefaction risk.
The Solution
Traylor Pacific, the General Contractor for the Port subcontracted
with Condon-Johnson & Associates (CJA) to install over
3,500 stone columns to depths of 42’ for phase II of
the project. Total value of this contract was over $ 5.75 million.
CJA, in joint venture with Soletanche, installed
dry bottom feed stone columns utilizing over 120,000 tons
of course aggregate The dry bottom feed method was utilized
to allay concerns about disrupting the nesting habitat of
the Lesser Tern, a bird which frequents the area.
The Result
The project was performed on a double shift basis and was
completed in five months, under budget and ahead of schedule..
