Hwy 1 Jenner
Client: CALTRANS
Oakland
The Challenge
A slide repair on Hwy 1 near Jenner, CA was let by CALTRANS
to Condon-Johnson & Associates (CJA). This $ 4.5 million
project included 25,000 cubic meters of earth excavation,
drainage placement, paving, an MSE wall, and landscaping.
The Solution
The slide repair consisted of a large soldier pile and lagging
wall, which was buttressed with two rows of double corrosion
protected anchors. CJA created the 10 meter wall with soldier
piles which were drilled to depths of 18.5 meters using an
AF-18 drill rig produced by IMT. The permanent tiebacks were
installed using a Klemm drill performing duplex drilling.
The anchors were attached to the soldier pile wall with a
cast-in-place concrete wale created with stained concrete
for aesthetics.
In order to restore Hwy 1 while repairing
the slide, it was necessary to restrict traffic to one lane,
CJA implemented a traffic control signal system.
The Result
The entire project, to reinforce and shore up the downhill
side of the road, was completed in twelve months.
