5/ 805 Interchange (CALTRANS)
Client: Yeager Skanska Construction (YSC)
San Diego
CALTRANS is widening and redeveloping
the 5/805 interchange in San Diego, and contracted Yeager
Skanska Construction (YSC) to lead the project. YSC subsequently
subcontracted the installation of the drilled shafts to Condon-Johnson
& Associates (CJA).
The Challenge
A tremendous amount of planning and coordination was required
to fulfill this contract successfully, as the site was adjacent
to active traffic lanes of these busy freeways.
The Solution
The $ 15 million project which involved installing 152 shafts
varying from 1.5-3.8 meters in diameter up to depths of 55
meters was performed utilizing IMT AF-300s, Soil Mec 825s,
and Taurus XLs .
Reinforcing steel cages up to 77,300 kg were
hoisted utilizing six point picks and multiple cranes. Concrete
pours, some lasting eight hours, were staged to maintain continuity
of placement. Concrete was placed by tremie pump methods as well
as free fall.
In addition to the large diameter shafts,
134 shafts measuring 610 millimeter were installed.
